Amazon Best Sellers of 2020 in Books #4,定格日期:2020年4月6日。

With her second novel, Celeste Ng further proves she’s a sensitive, insightful writer with a striking ability to illuminate life in America. This amazing book is now adapted by Witherspoon and Washington’s Hulu and the series is streaming on the platform.

Little Fires Everywhere depicts the social intricacies and injustices of American suburban life. It’s about the people who live in Shaker Heights and the lives they lead. Shaker Heights is a place all about appearances. The lawn must always be perfectly mowed. The houses all have to be certain colours. There’s some weird rules regarding garbage. Children can walk to school without having to walk across busy roads. It’s a town full of rich ‘good’ people, a town mostly full of the elite. Until Mia and Pearl arrive and a custody battle for a Chinese-American baby ensues.

Mia appears selfish and nomadic, moving from town to town, never putting down roots, and dragging her teenage daughter along. The two become involved with the Richardson family, and Mia clashes with the head of the household, Elena. At first glance, Mrs. Richardson is the perfect mother. She and her family seem to have an ideal life, in an upscale community, where everything is well planned, and there are rules for everything. But, as the lives of these two women unfold and get entangled, you gradually begin to see that all is not as it seems.

Another critical part of this story revolves around the adoption of a Chinese baby by Mrs. Richardson.s friends, who are unable to have children of their own. As the adoption process proceeds, there are complications, ending in a fierce custody battle. Issues such as inter-racial adoption, child abandonment, and income inequities are examined.

The heart of this book revolves around the depth of the characters and the complexities of the plot. This book takes an in-depth look at relationships between a mother and her children and also what it means to be a mother. You'll read this book straight through to the end and feel sad when it's finished.
