It may sound like a lazy title for a teenage sleuth novel, describing Mr. Bolton's work as President Trump's National Security Adviser for 17 months in great detail, confirms the world’s worst fears about the man who regards himself to be a “stable genius”. If you like Fire and Fury: Inside Trump White House, in which author Michael Wolff largely conveys Steve Bannon's perspective , you may find this book better for one simple reason: it is first-hand information, without a middleman like Michael Wolff in between, despite the fact that it is two and a half years too late.

An outspoken American nationalist known for his hawkish commentaries on Fox News, Bolton had been an ambassador to the United Nations besides working in a number of administrative capacities for George W. Bush, before taking charge of national security for Trump between April 2018 and September 2019.

Bolton makes a number of sensational claims in his memoir, whose release the White House unsuccessfully tried to block on the grounds of it containing classified information. Trump castigated his former colleague by calling him “grossly incompetent and a liar”, which, ironically, would be an appropriate label for the president himself, based on the impression one gets from Bolton’s accounts in the book.

Bolton’s list of disclosures is long: the failure to oust Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela; Trump’s persuasion of Xi to increase ‘farm-product purchases’ to boost the ‘crucial farm-state’ vote bank for the presidential elections; the president’s strange choice of Camp David for a meeting with the Taliban; Trump’s shady deal with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky — offering military aid in lieu of a Ukranian investigation into a company in which Hunter Biden served as a board member to malign Joe Biden and so on.

Bolton gives us this book really is nothing more than a catalogue of his failings to incite American showdowns with the EU, Nato, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela and more. The memoir is best read as a register of deep resentment that often engulfs the professional lives of veteran civil servants. The Room Where It Happened imparts lessons to serving bureaucrats as well as aspirants of government posts.
