"How to Be an Antiracist” is a memoir by Ibram X. Kendi that details his grapplings with racism and his advice for eliminating it. Kendi is the director of the Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University and the author of “Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America,” which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 2016.

A more accurate title for Ibram X Kendi’s engaging and compelling book might be “How I learned to think like an antiracist and how you can too.”The book is more than a dry non-fiction, it draws on the author's life to give examples of all he talks about in his book, making it like a memoir and an educational book. It's got a great format, with well thought out chapter divisions, real-life examples, and helpful definitions. The format makes it both easy and interesting to read.

Kendi clearly defines his terms. A racist is “One who is supporting a racist policy through their actions or inaction or expressing a racist idea.” An antiracist, on the other hand, is “One who is supporting an antiracist policy through their actions or expressing an antiracist idea.” The key word is policy. Kendi argues that it is the unseen policies in housing, education, justice, and the distribution of wealth that hurt Blacks and help whites that are the real problems we must address. In addition, he has faith that once we transform the policies, people will adapt to the changes.

He suggests: “Antiracist policies cannot eliminate class racism without anti-capitalist policies. Anti-capitalism cannot eliminate class racism without antiracism.” That feels like a daunting statement. Yet, Kendi explains at length why this is true and challenges the reader to explore and confront beliefs that restrain us from seeing the value in each person and striving to change our preconceptions.

Although he points out the tragic inequities between Blacks and whites, he doesn’t propose how we go about closing those gaps. Also, because this is a book about how we think about race, it is easy enough as a reader to agree with Kendi and identify as an antiracist — without actually doing anything to change the problems facing Black Americans. This isn’t your usual “how to” book. It’s designed to give you pause, to cause you to reflect, to challenge some of your ingrained beliefs, and to take action to change policies.
