Rage by Washington Post veteran Bob Woodward documents the first three-and-a-half years of Donald Trump’s presidency. Drawing from 17 interviews Woodward secured with Trump, the book ends with a discussion of the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

His first book on the Trump presidency, Fear: Trump in the White House, sold over one million copies and its title was out of a remark from then candidate Trump in an interview with Woodward and journalist Robert Costa: “Real power is – I don’t even want to use the word – fear.” And the title for this second book, Rage, is from a comment in one of seventeen interviews Woodward conducted with the president between December 2019 and July 2020: “I bring rage out. I do bring rage out. I always have. I don’t know if that’s an asset or a liability, but whatever it is I do.”

Unlike some reporters, who prefer to use reported speech, Woodward uses a lot of direct speech and his books are laden with conversations. And most of them will leave you shaking your head in bewilderment. Bewilderment that something like this can happen. Worse, something like this is happening. You start to wonder if this is fact or fiction. Throughout the book, Woodward proclaims shock (though one wonders why) at how shallow Trump is. Asked about his strategy for dealing with the plethora of crises hitting him, Trump replies, “I don’t have a strategy,” except to “do a good job.”

Rage is two books in one. The first part is a traditional Woodwardian inside-the-beltway account of the Trump presidency. In the second part, Woodward reports that presidency in light of Trump’s disastrous — deadly — mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic.

Why did Trump agree to talk with Woodward? In part for the same reason many powerful people do: because it means they’ll end up in the history books, and if they can charm Woodward, they’ll come off well. Trump clearly thought he could charm Woodward. But the final sentence of the epilogue summarizes the whole book: Trump is the wrong man for the job. Coming from a journalist who has studied every president from Nixon to Obama, those are powerful words. And ironically, that is the US President himself collaborated with Woodward on the book.
